The Founder

Melissa Hough is an American choreographer, performer, teacher, and producer, and the Founder and Artistic Director of Oslo City Ballet.

Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, she trained at the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington, D.C., after beginning her dance education in the American competition and convention circuit. She went on to enjoy a distinguished international performing career as a principal dancer with Boston Ballet, Houston Ballet, and the Norwegian National Ballet, where she performed many of the classical and contemporary repertoire's leading roles. In 2017, she received the Tom Wilhelmsen Foundation Opera and Ballet Prize in recognition of her contributions as both a dancer and choreographer in Norway. Her portrayal of Carmen was also recognized in Dance Europe's Critics' Choice, and her choreographic debut, "Epic Short", was selected for presentation at the Diaghilev P.S. International Arts Festival in St. Petersburg.

Alongside her performing career, Melissa has developed an interdisciplinary choreographic practice spanning theatre, museums, film, and site-specific performance. Her work includes Bridal Procession in Hardanger, created in collaboration with the National Museum of Norway and the Norwegian National Ballet, as well as collaborations with live musicians in works including Goldberg Variations and Preludes and Shadows. Whether creating narrative ballets, abstract works, or performances in unconventional spaces, she is interested in building meaningful experiences that connect artists, audiences, and communities.

Melissa has taught extensively throughout the United States and Norway and has worked with dancers at every stage of their development, from students of all ages to professional artists. She has served as a dancers' union representative in both countries, was selected to participate in Positioning Ballet's Future Leaders Forum, and serves on the Advisory Committee of the Naples International Dance Festival. She continues to choreograph on professional companies internationally.

Oslo City Ballet represents the next chapter of Melissa's artistic journey. Founded in 2026, the platform was created from a belief that dance can be both artistically ambitious and deeply connected to the communities it serves. Through original productions, reimagined classics, education, and creative partnerships, Oslo City Ballet seeks to expand who dance is for while supporting healthier, more sustainable careers for dancers. Melissa's long-term vision is to build a company that champions artistic excellence, collaboration, and cultural exchange between Norway and the international dance community.
